What is a school of the future?
The school of the future is a learning space where conventional classrooms are complemented by digital and transformable zones. In such schools, learning is combined with project work, laboratories, and flexible organization of space.
• In Russian examples of the new generation, they use mobile furniture, open media libraries, and areas that can be quickly reconfigured for a lesson, a project, or relaxation.
• Learning tools include 3D modeling, 3D printing, virtual reality, and digital laboratories.
• International organizations, including UNESCO and the OECD, view the school as part of a broader learning ecosystem rather than just a separate building.
Space and layout
The architecture of the school of the future is built on adaptable spaces. The same room can function as a classroom, a co-working area, a library, or a place for group work.
• In design solutions for new-generation schools, open dining areas, media libraries, and zones for senior students designed for independent work are used.
• Instead of fixed desk arrangements, mobile furniture is increasingly used. This allows the layout to be quickly changed for different types of activities.
• The educational environment is complemented by technoparks, "Tochka Rosta" (Growth Points), "Kvantoriums," and "IT-Cube" centers.
Vietnam's TEKY Academy, opened in 2017, became the country's first facility where children aged 6 to 18 are taught STEAM subjects. In its laboratories, students spend about 80% of their time working with technology — from robotics to digital projects.
What is taught and how
Learning at the school of the future is based on practice and research. Alongside conventional subjects, it uses engineering, technological, and project-based formats.
• In a number of schools, students work with 3D printers, VR headsets, and quadcopters, and present their results as models, videos, and prototypes.
• In international approaches, STEAM education is increasingly mentioned, where art is added to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
• The OECD emphasizes that educational institutions should provide high-quality, accessible, and innovative learning in cooperation with other organizations.
Technologies and examples
Digital tools in the school of the future do not replace the teacher but expand their capabilities. Lessons use interactive materials, trainers, and systems for individual pacing.
• UNESCO is developing the Futures of Education program, which explores new learning scenarios and the role of the school in the future.
• In Russia, schools and centers already operate where students are introduced to 3D modeling, programming, and virtual reality in modern laboratories.
• In such models, the school becomes not only a place for lessons but also a platform for experimentation, teamwork, and technical creativity.
