TYPE OF SPORT "WINGSUIT"
WHAT IS A WINGSUIT

Wingsuit flying is an extreme form of skydiving that uses a special suit with "wings" between the arms and legs. This increases the surface area of the body, allowing the athlete to glide through the air for longer and move forward.

FLIGHT

A wingsuit jump begins from an aircraft, a mountain, or another high vantage point; the athlete then glides through the air before deploying a parachute.

In this sport, both speed and horizontal distance are highly valued. According to equipment manufacturers, records can span tens of kilometers.

There are various disciplines, including solo flights, group formations, and proximity flying—gliding close to mountain slopes and terrain.

DEVELOPMENT OF SPORT

In 1912, tailor Franz Reichelt attempted to jump from the Eiffel Tower to test his invention, but he died in the process. In 1930, an American named Rex Finney used a wing-like device to increase horizontal movement while parachuting.

The modern wingsuit emerged in the 1990s. In 1996, French skydiver Patrick de Gayardon performed the first flights in a suit of his own design—a design that was already quite similar to modern versions.

In 2015, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) officially recognized wingsuit flying and wingsuit acrobatics as full-fledged air sports.
